History of Parsons Trenchers
In 1893, George W. Parsons and F.L. Maytag established a business; their first product was an attachment for threshing machines known as the Parsons Self-Feeder and Band Cutter. The partnership was dissolved and Maytag went on to form his own company making a newfangled machine called a clothes washer.
The City of Newton, Iowa began installing its sanitary sewer system in 1903. Parsons watched the excavation and it occurred to him that the method used left much to be desired. Earlier, during the winter, Parsons had been working on a machine to cut ice from a local source for storage until the following summer and he thought the same principal would apply to dirt. The following year (1904), Parsons tried his new trenching machine.

It was built in two sections and mounted on large steel wheels. The front section carried a steam engine, a large boiler, and a hopper for fuel. The rear section held a ladder arrangement with a chain of digging units. The result was a fast and safe trenching device!

Parsons started making trenching machines in an old abandoned church. Quarters were cramped, but it was here that the first production model trencher was built and sold in 1905. Here is a summary of what happened to the company since then:
1905-1960's: Production continued in Newton, Iowa under the Parsons name.
Late 1960s: The company was sold to Koehring Company.
1976: Koehring sold the rubber tired portion of the product line to Seaman Co., a division of Stowell Industries.
Early 1977: Seaman Co. moved the operations to Milwaukee, WI.
Jan. 1978: Seaman-Parsons (the new company name) purchased the Digz-All trenchers in Merrill, Iowa to give it a complete line of trenchers from the walk-behind 8 HP to the 95 HP T-950.
1992: Maxon Industries purchased the rights and assets to the Parsons line of Trenchers and Cable Plows and moved their operations to the present facility in Milwaukee, WI.
Today: Maxon Industries places a renewed importance on customer service, with a new parts facility, engineering department, and an "800" number to service customers nationwide.
